THE ROLE OF PERIODONTAL DISEASE IN CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE
Keywords:
periodontitis, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, mitral valveAbstract
Periodontal diseases (PD), primarily chronic generalized periodontitis, are common inflammatory diseases affecting up to 40–50% of the adult population. Accumulated data indicate an independent association between PD and cardiovascular disease (CVD), including atherosclerotic events, heart failure, and endothelial dysfunction. The purpose of this review is to systematize epidemiological and mechanistic evidence, evaluate the impact of periodontal therapy on cardiovascular biomarkers.
