Abstract

Patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) face many complications. One of these complications is damage to the auditory system. Several mechanisms for the development of hearing loss in these patients have been proposed. No studies have been conducted in Uzbekistan to determine the degree of hearing loss and audiometric test results in patients with ESRD. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence, type, and associated factors of hearing complications in patients with ESRD. Fifty-four patients with ESRD underwent clinical examination and audiometric testing. Their medical records were reviewed to identify any factors contributing to the development of hearing complications. A high prevalence of sensorineural hearing loss was found in patients with ESRD. Hearing loss was more pronounced at high frequencies. Its prevalence and severity increased with increasing renal failure and chronicity of hemodialysis. No gender differences were observed. Hearing loss did not affect speech intelligibility or acoustic reflex scores. Sensorineural hearing loss is common in patients with chronic kidney disease and deserves more attention than it currently receives.
