Abstract

Intraocular lenses (IOLs) are used in ophthalmology to restore vision after removal of the natural lens, for example, to patients with cataracts. In the case of vitreectomy, which is a surgical procedure to remove the vitreous from inside the eye, proper IOL calculation becomes critical point to achieving optimal visual outcome.

Vitrectomy can affect the optical performance of the eye, and the professional ophthalmologist should take these changes into account when designing an IOL. Incorrect calculation can lead to astigmatism, myopia or hyperopia.

Modern technologies and methods, such as the use of biometric data obtained using optical biometers and other diagnostic tools, help ophthalmologists more accurately determine the parameters necessary for correct IOL calculation after vitrectomy. All of these factors are important to prevent possible complications and ensure that the patient has the best possible vision recovery.

The article presents a clinical case of IOL implantation in a patient who suffered a penetrating injury of the eye, who subsequently underwent surgical treatment to remove the natural lens and total vitrectomy. Based on such a message, it is possible to transfer experience to other medical specialists to improve the clinical and functional results of patients with this pathology. The presented material will allow ophthalmic surgeons to become familiar with the correct tactics for selecting, calculating and implanting IOLs in patients with eye injuries.
