Abstract

Purpose: to study the relationship between the level of brain-derived neurotrophic factor and the incidence of acute ischemic stroke in young people.

Materials and methods: The study included 83 patients aged 22-44 years (main group) who had suffered acute ischemic stroke (males - 41 (49.4%), females 42 (50.6%); average age 38.71±6.5 years). The control group consisted of 54 practically healthy individuals, comparable in age and gender (males 31 (57,4%), females 23 (42,6%); average age 38,59±6,64 years. Quantitative determination of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) was carried out using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Results: A careful study of the data presented in the above table revealed an inverse correlation between the concentration of the biomarker and the severity of the disease and the severity of neurological symptoms. In patients with a mild degree of neurological impairment according to the NIHSS scale, we observed a high concentration of serum BDNF and, conversely, a decrease in its level was determined in patients with an extremely severe degree of neurological deficit (r=-0,137, p<0,05). When conducting an intragroup analysis of the quantitative determination of serum BDNF in patients, depending on the pathogenetic subtype of IS, a relationship was established between the level of neurotrophin and the severity of neurological disorders, while the lowest level of this biomarker was observed in patients with hemodynamic stroke.

Conclusion: Patients with the lowest BDNF values have an increased risk of unfavorable outcome of ischemic stroke and a low level of rehabilitation potential, while increased levels of this marker in the brain contribute to the restoration of lost functions.
