Abstract

Diabetes-related peripheral neuropathy is a common and debilitating complication of diabetes, contributing significantly to morbidity and healthcare costs. Our systematic review aims to determine the prevalence of BPDN among individuals with diabetic peripheral neuropathy and to identify associated risk factors. In subgroup analyses, significant statistical differences in prevalence estimates were found between the different methods of neuropathic pain diagnosis, with pain scales specific to neuropathy indicating higher rates. Patients with a mean duration of diabetes of more than 7 years reported a higher prevalence. Significant risk factors for BPDN included age older than 65 years , female sex, BMI≥30 kg/m2, duration of diabetes for more than 5 years, history of cardiovascular events, presence of nephropathy or retinopathy. Targeted screening and standardized diagnostic methods will improve the timely detection of diabetic neuropathy and prevention of BPDN, which in turn will lead to the mitigation of its burden in patients with type 2 DM.
