PREVENTION OF LYMPHEDEMA IN PATIENTS WITH OBESITY: CURRENT RECOMMENDATIONS AND CLINICAL PRACTICE

Lymphedema is a chronic, progressive condition characterized by impaired lymphatic drainage leading to tissue swelling, fibrosis, and functional disability. Obesity has emerged as one of the most significant risk factors for both primary and secondary lymphedema, influencing its onset, severity, and therapeutic outcomes. The global rise in obesity prevalence has therefore brought renewed attention to preventive strategies and evidence-based management of lymphatic disorders. This paper reviews current understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms linking obesity and lymphedema, summarizes clinical guidelines on prevention, and discusses practical approaches for early detection, lifestyle interventions, and integrated multidisciplinary care.
