Abstract

Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP, atrial natriuretic factor, atrial natriuretic hormone, atriopeptin, atriopeptide) is a peptide hormone secreted by cardiomyocytes and is a potent vasodilator. Atrial natriuretic peptides play a part in regulating water-electrolyte metabolism and adipose tissue metabolism. They are synthesized in the muscle cells of the atria in response to increased blood pressure. Atrial natriuretic peptide reduces water volume and sodium concentration in the vascular bed.
