The article examines the principles of development of Chinese drama in the first half of the twentieth century, its ideological orientation, significant changes in the forms of literary works, reveals the work of playwrights who contributed to its development, and also it identifies aspects of the impact of Western literature on Chinese theater and drama which developed in line with national traditions for centuries.
In addition, the article analyzes the play “上海屋檐下” Under the Roofs of Shanghai by Xia Yan who played a significant role in the development of drama, as well as it highlights the artistic panorama of the era through the interpretation of images of this work.
