Abstract

This article discusses the features of using jargon, vulgarism, slang words and their functions such as expressiveness, rudeness, assessment, playfulness, contempt. It is mentioned that they are used in oral, daily, mainly dialogic speech to characterize the described thing and event more emotionally. Also, it is noted that the vocabulary layer with a reduced stylistic tone in different areas of speech communication performs various emotional and expressive functions, but in all cases the stylistic meaning of this vocabulary layer is related to the features of the speech and situational context. Texts of American novels served as material for analysis.
