ATTEMPTS AT MODERNIZATION IN THE USSR: FROM STALIN TO GORBACHEV

The article examines the evolution of attempts to modernize (update), reform society during the existence of the former Soviet Union in 1900-1990. In connection with the level of political consciousness and culture of peoples, their mentality and diversity of values, the factors of non- realization of progressive ideas and strengthening of anti-modernization processes are analyzed. At the end of the article, scientific conclusions on these issues are given.
