SPECIFICITY AND FUNCTIONS OF PRECEDENT PHENOMENA IN ENGLISH JOURNALISTIC TEXTS

ABSTRACT
This article is devoted to the topical issue of precedent phenomena in journalistic texts of the English-language media. The article’s aim is to study the special features and functions of precedent phenomena in English journalistic texts. The research methods were the following: analysis of scientific literature, analysis of English-language media texts, induction, deduction and generalization of analytical conclusions. The article’s author concludes that the specificity of precedent phenomena is their national marking, which provides intertextual communication and conveys informative content in accordance with the historical, cultural and linguistic realities of native English speakers. The author of the article believes that the dominant functions in English journalistic precedent phenomena are: pragmatic, nominative, informative and modeling functions. All functions of precedent phenomena in English journalistic texts are as follows: evaluative, pragmatic, password, aesthetic, euphemistic, expressive, accumulative, as well as the functions of a language game, standardization (modeling), additional information content and increasing authority.
