Abstract

The concept of “active ageing” was first articulated in 2002 in the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Active Ageing Strategy. According to WHO’s definition, active ageing is “the process of optimizing opportunities for health, participation, and security in order to enhance quality of life as people age.” This article analyzes the Active Ageing Index (AAI) and the employment level of older adults in Uzbekistan. The study is based on survey data and statistical analysis conducted from August to November 2023 among individuals aged 55 and above in Uzbekistan. The AAI was assessed across four domains: employment, social participation, healthy and safe living, and enabling environment and opportunities. The paper presents AAI values and its component indicators, disaggregated by gender and place of residence. Special attention is paid to the factors that hinder the employment and social engagement of older adults.
