The article explores the spread of Arabic script in Transoxiana between the eighth and fifteenth centuries, its adaptation to local written languages and its role in manuscript culture. Historical comparative and source-critical approaches are used to examine the relationship between writing, Islamic education, scholarly networks, and Persian and Turkic literary production. The use of Arabic script is distinguished from the use of the Arabic language, showing how different linguistic traditions developed within a shared graphic framework. Calligraphy, papermaking, copying and reading are interpreted as interconnected processes. The consolidation of Arabic script is explained through the combined influence of religious needs, professional literacy and the conditions of book production.
